Organic Body and Skincare

Body Title:

Meet Lady Bamford, the woman behind Bamford

Meet the woman behind one of our favorite organic body and skincare brands, Bamford. During this conversation with Lady Bamford, we had the chance to discuss the brand history, their philosophy, their view of sustainability and how their products are insipred by nature.

Why did you decide to create Bamford and what was the dream?

Bamford was a natural evolution from Daylesford. After we’d made the decision to farm organically, my interest and concern for the way I was doing things grew and I began to look at other areas of my life and question the choices I was making.  Our skin is our largest organ, so it makes sense to me that what I put on my body is as nourishing as what goes into it. I didn’t want to be filling my body with the chemicals I was avoiding in my food, instead it was instinctive to look to nature and to the purest ingredients possible to feed my skin, so I decided to create a range of skincare and body products to reflect that. But I also had to ensure that the products were made in an ecological and sustainable way, and of course that they would achieve visible results. The clothing followed later but the reasoning behind the line is the same: I simply wanted to create garments that I could feel happy wearing, where I could own and account for each part of the manufacturing process and the fibres, they were made from to ensure that the garments embraced the transparency and the ethical principles and philosophy for which the farm stood.

What is Bamford’s biggest advantage compared to other brands?

I think it’s a dual focus of nurturing our bodies and a desire to remain connected to nature and to care for it. Everything we do at Bamford is led by nature and by a desire to work in harmony with it, to harness its powers and use them to nourish and soothe our bodies, but also to protect and support it – to ensure we are not the last generation to enjoy its beauty and its might.

What do you personally do to add to your wellness and wellbeing rituals every day?

I have practised yoga and meditation since I was young and they continue to help me nurture my own well-being every day. When you practise yoga or meditate you’re creating your own space, a place and a time for yourself. We all live such fast-paced, often high-stress lives, and rarely take the time just to be and sit with ourselves, to reconnect with our minds. Many of us are very careful about how we nourish our bodies through our food, so why do we not value our minds in the same way? Yoga and meditation concentrate my mind but above all they ground me and they look after my spirit. If I have to miss my practice for a few days I can feel it; I feel as though I’m off balance. To me that time in the morning is essential and I believe everyone needs to have moments of that kind in their day, whether it’s by taking a walk, having a bath or reading a book – we all need to stop and recharge.

Sleep is also extremely important – it really is one of the most fundamental pillars of wellness and I have always tried to get a good night’s sleep. For a long time sleep has been disregarded, with many thinking they can survive with very few hours rest and still be productive. But to feel well and at our best, it’s been proven that we need sufficient sleep; it’s our body’s time to restore itself. A calming, soothing night-time routine is key for me, it gives my body and mind time to prepare itself for sleep.

How do you imagine the future of Bamford?

One of my greatest hopes is that the current momentum driving sustainability continues and above all that our renewed respect for where and how our products are made prompts us to ask wider questions about sustaining our environment.

Can you give me the ideal scenario and picture of an evening with Bamford candles and body products?

I’ll often have a bath before bed using the B Silent Night-time Bath Concentrate and will use the Temple Balm and Pillow Mist to ease my body into sleep. I also find lighting a Bamford candle and having a hot drink relaxes me and I love our sleep-inducing organic infusion.
